Enterprise-class RAID functions
RAID Recovery - Enterprise-class RAID functions
RAID is progressively becoming popular among small as well as medium sized enterprises for its accuracy, timely result and enhancement for data protection. Some basic functions of RAID come along with most of the operating systems, such RAID include RAID 0 which boosts the performance and RAID 1 which minimises risks and uncertainty against permanent data loss. Some enterprise-class RAID features such as ‘online capacity expansion’ and ‘online RAID level migration’ which had been accessible only with high-end SCSI based RAID were not very popular or widely known, but with the evolving technology it is also on the way to becoming available with affordable price.
The most visible feature of ‘enterprise-class’ RAID level such as ‘N-way mirroring’ and ‘controller spanning’ is to create real value and gain efficiency for small enterprises.
Hot swapping, online capacity expansion, and online RAID level migration:
There are numerous advanced levels of RAID which are popularly used by unifying with each another. Hot swapping permits disks to be physically added or detached; online capacity expansion allows a data array to be stretched across multiple disks; and online RAID level migration allows various types of RAID array to be transformed into a new type on the fly. These are some sophisticated features that offer huge alterations to the storage system without letting the system go offline.
They can modify the storage system without interrupting or affecting operations. While an organization with transaction processing application starts expanding or broadening its horizon, business data can be protected with basic RAID levels such as RAID 1. But, advanced RAID levels are significant to increase the disk capacity with the level of transaction. Moreover, hot swapping, OCE and OPLM are required to prevent the system going offline. All are equally vigorously perform together to protect permanent data loss. When a small sized organization develops, input/output performance needs to improve the overall performance and IT groups need to add two or more disks. In such cases, RAID 10 which provides fast random reads as well as writes, is advantageous.
