NAS Recovery - Buffalo Network-Attached Storage Series
Buffalo network-attached storage series refers to a set of network-attached storage (NAS) devices designed and sold by Buffalo Technology, a division of Melco. They include LinkStation, TeraStation and KuroBox. LinkStation and TeraStation provide a central location to store, access and share multiple files. KuroBox provides a cheap platform for Linux development.
LinkStation
LinkStation is based on PowerPC, MIPS or ARM architecture. It includes Ethernet, USB and serial ports, but does not have video output. LinkStation is popular for their ‘hackable’ nature. The device can be hacked into a generic Linux appliance and made to perform multiple tasks other than file storing.
TeraStation
TeraStation is also based on PowerPC or ARM architecture processor. It uses four internal hard drives mounted in a RAID array.
KuroBox
KuroBox is a series of PowerPC and ARM processor based computers. It was originally made from spare hardware components of LinkStation. Later versions of KuroBox use hardware similar to LinkStation. KuroBox does not have a hard drive. It has the same physical dimension as the corresponding LinkStation.
Uses
LinkStation Pro and KuroBox Pro ships with Universal Plug and Play protocol for distributing multimedia stored on the device. The products can be configured as different types of servers such as Samba server, NFS server, Twonky Vision Media server, ITunes server, etc., using appropriate protocols.
Buffalo NAS series can also be modified to be used as backup server, print server. Through their USB interface, these devices can be used to perform a number of other tasks as well.
