Tape Data Recovery - IBM 3592

The IBM 3592 is a series of tape drives and corresponding magnetic tape data storage media formats developed by IBM. These tape drives were able to store up to 1 TB of uncompressed data and had a native data transfer rate of up to 160 MB/s.

IBM 3592 drives were marked by their speed, reliability and low media cost. More importantly, they offered higher levels of transferability. Tapes recorded with one tape drive could be read on drives from other manufacturers as well.

Like its preceding models 3590 and 3480, IBM 3592 format used half inch tape spooled onto 4-by-5-by-1 inch data cartridges containing a single reel. A take-up reel is incorporated inside the tape drive.

The first drive in the series was Jaguar which offered 60 GB capacity with 3592 JJ/JR cartridge and 300 GB with 3592 JA/JW cartridge. It was followed by TS1120, which also had the nickname Jaguar and had a capacity of 100 GB with 3592 JJ/JR cartridge and 500 GB with 3592 JA/JW cartridge. With 3592 JB/JX cartridge, it offered 700 GB. The next one to follow was TS1130. With 3592 JJ/JR cartridge, TS1130 offered 128 GB and with 3592 JA/JW cartridge it offered 640 GB. For 3592 JB/JX cartridge, it offered an awesome 1 TB capacity.

Both TS1120 and TS1130 drives included built-in encryption processing, with platform software managing encryption keys. Prior to this, drives required server-based software to encrypt and decrypt tapes.
