NASLite
NAS Recovery - NASLite
NASLite v1.x is a collection of Linux-based network attached storage (NAS) server operating systems designed to turn a conventional computer with PCI interface into a dedicated file server.
NASLite v1.x fits into a single 3 ½ -inch floppy disk. It boots from the floppy disk, leaving the entire hard disk for storage. NASLite is a community file server; it does not support features such as user management or the ability to join domains or disk quotas. It supports serving files to clients running Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and others.
File serving requires less processing speed as opposed to network speed or hard drive speed. Because of this, a NASLite can run even on old computers with little processing power. Also, since it runs from a floppy disk, all four IDE channels can be used for hard drives.
NASLite comes in three variations to support different file serving protocols. They are: Samba to support serving to Microsoft Windows client machines, NFS to serve to UNIX based operating systems, and FTP.
NASLite can bypass the BIOS and directly access the hard drives; thus, it is capable of supporting new larger hard drives that could not be supported by older machines. NASLite finds the best application in small businesses or home office network.
Later versions of NASLite are released as closed-source software. They support various networking protocols and booting the operating system from CD-ROM, USB mass storage device or hard disk drive. Version 2.0 of NASLite is renamed as NanoNAS.
