SAN Recovery - Data Center

A datacenter, also known as a server farm, refers to a large facility that accommodates computer systems and supporting components such as telecommunications and storage systems. It also includes redundant power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls and security devices.

A datacenter is used for the storage, management, and dissemination of data and information relevant to a particular body or organization. An organization can have its own datacenter. Typically, every large organization has one, in the form of a server room or a computer closet. Thus a datacenter can be synonymous with the network operations center (NOC).

Classification

Datacenters are classified into different types based on their size and functionality. The simplest of them is a Tier 1 datacenter, which is basically a computer room, following basic guidelines for the installation of computer systems. Tier 4 datacenter are designed to host mission critical computer systems. They are featured with compartmentalized security zones with fully redundant access controls methods.

Uses
Datacenters are crucial to ensure business continuity. They provide a reliable infrastructure for IT operation and minimize any chance of disruption. Also, they provide information security. The highly secure datacenter environment minimizes the chances of security breach.

Requirements
The physical environment within a datacenter is rigorously controlled. The recommended temperature range for a datacenter is 20–25 °C (68–75 °F) and humidity range of 40–55%. Datacenters must have backup power with one or more uninterruptible power supplies and/or diesel generators. All elements of the electrical systems are typically fully duplicated. Other safety measures such as fire protection systems and physical security measures should be well in place.
