SAN Recovery - Enterprise Content Management

Enterprise content management (ECM), according to Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) International, is the “strategies, methods and tools used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organizational processes.”

ECM encompasses the legacy problem domains that have been addressed by records management and document management. It also addresses issues such as converting of digital content to and from the traditional media, including physical and computerized filing and retrieval systems, often involving paper and microforms.

ECM components have been derived from the electronic document management systems (EDMS) software products released in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The original EDMS offered functionality in one of four main functional areas: imaging, workflow, document management or COLD/ERM.

Advantages of Content Management Solutions
The primary purpose of content management solutions is to save time or improve accessibility to information. They reduce the need of paper storage and ensure secure and error-free handling of documents. Access to information becomes faster. It also ensures improved tracking and monitoring, with the ability to identify bottlenecks and modify the system to improve efficiency.

ECM market has remained highly competitive. Of late, it has witnessed the entry of software giants like Microsoft and Oracle Corporation. They are keen to develop solutions for content management. To start with, Microsoft has offered its SharePoint product family and Oracle has provided the Oracle Content Management products to organizations of all types.

Experts believe that the efforts of these big players are likely to create stratification in the current ECM market, based on the level of content services that different organizations require.
