SAN Recovery - Hitachi Data Systems
Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) is a Santa Clara, California- based enterprise storage provider. HDS sells mid-range and high-end storage systems, software and services. HDS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. and part of the Hitachi Information Systems & Telecommunications Division.
The company was formed in 1989 when Hitachi and Electronic Data Systems (EDS) acquired National Advanced Systems (NAS) from National Semiconductor and renamed it as Hitachi Data Systems. During the initial years, HDS focused on both Hitachi IBM-compatible mainframes and storage systems. In 1998, the company exited mainframe business and concentrated on enterprise storage.
Important Products
HDS’ storage systems range in size from PC-sized units to massive cabinets. They can manage more than 30 petabytes of data. The company also sells network-attached storage (NAS) servers. Its software portfolio encompasses backup and recovery, content archiving, replication, and storage resource management applications.
The most important hardware product of HDS is the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform (USP) family of products. They are HDS’ high-end storage platform dedicated for consolidation of enterprise storage needs, including virtualization of internal and external heterogeneous into one pool. These products are supplied to OEMs and resold through HP as its StorageWorks XP 12000, and by Sun Microsystems as its Sun StoreEdge 9900.
Another hardware product from the company is the Adaptable Modular Storage 2000 line designed for fault tolerant mission critical storage needs. They are characterized by symmetric active-active controller architecture.
Hitachi Data Systems competes with EMC and IBM in the market for high-end redundant array of independent disks (RAID) storage devices and software.
