RAID Recovery - Mirror

Mirroring also provides a means to protect contents on a Web site. In case one of the copies is removed from the server, the owner can still use the other one and make multiple copies of it. The best example to demonstrate this is the banning of Google search engine in China in 2002. Even after the ban, people were able to access Google through a mirror site elgooG (Google spelt backwards). Apart from providing its normal search functions, elgooG also gave access to Web sites that were normally banned in China.

Mirror Web sites use less bandwidth, so they act as an inexpensive way of storing data. Therefore, they are used to preserve historic contents of an organization. Mirroring allows them to remove the older contents from the server and make it available for fresh contents. At the same time, it preserves the contents in a safe location so that they can be accessed as and when required.

Mirroring is also adopted as one of the unethical practices of search engine optimization (SEO). In such cases, each mirror site is provided with back links to every other mirror so as to increase traffic to the Web sites. This method of ‘cultivating’ links is called link farming. However, popular search engine logarithms, such as those of Google, penalize Web sites which adopt such practices.

Summary: Mirroring is a process of making duplicate copies of a data set. The process is commonly used in Web sites and hard disks. Basically, mirroring helps in protecting the original content against loss. Mirrors also act as multiple sources of particular information.
