Compact Macintosh
Macintosh Recovery - Compact Macintosh
Compact Macintosh refers to the all-in-one desktop computer designs of the original Macintosh personal computers designed by Apple Computer. They indicated the models that used the case designs of the original Macintosh sold between 1984 and the mid 90s.
A common feature of the Compact Macintosh design is that their display is integrated in the computer case, but not the keyboard. There are five form factors to these models. They are: Macintosh 128K, Macintosh SE, Macintosh Classic, Macintosh Color Classic and Macintosh XL. Macintosh 128K and Macintosh SE are similar. Macintosh Classic, the retro model, features the 9” black and white screen. Macintosh Color Classic features 10” color screen. Macintosh XL differs in several aspects.
Apple’s larger all-in-one models such as the Macintosh LC 500 series, the Macintosh Performa 5xxx series or the iMac do not fit in the Compact or Classic category. Macintosh XL, derived from Apple Lisa, is a borderline case. It is included in the Classic spec page, but not included in the Compact range.
Most of the earlier Compact Macintoshes – Macintosh 128K and Macintosh SE- were based on Motorola 68000. Motorola 68030-based models include the Macintosh Classic and Macintosh Color Classic series introduced in the 1990s. Macintosh XL was the only model based on Apple Lisa.
