EZ 135 Drive
Removable Media - EZ 135 Drive
The EZ 135 Drive is a removable hard disk drive introduced by SyQuest Technology in 1995. This 3.5” drive offered a maximum capacity of 135 MB per disk.
The EZ 135 Drive was designed to compete the then popular Iomega Zip drive. It had higher capacity and greater speed than the Zip drive. The drive was available with a 2-year warranty. Additionally the removable hard disk cartridges included a 5-year warranty.
One of the major drawbacks of EZ 135 was that it was not backward compatible with other SyQuest drives. Also, its capacity was never increased beyond 135 MB. The much wider acceptance of Zip drive further compounded the problem and declined the sales of EZ 135.
Important specifications of EZ 135 are the following:
- Capacity: 135 MB
- Average Seek Time: 13.5ms
- Burst Transfer Rate: 4 MB/s
- Buffer Size: 64K
- Mechanism rated for: 200,000 hours
The EZ 135 Drive was available with several interfaces. The external version was available with parallel or SCSI Interface while the internal version was available with IDE or SCSI interface.
SyQuest released a successor drive, known as the SyQuest EZFlyer, in 1996. It was backwards compatible with the EZ 135 disks, and could be used with a higher capacity 230 MB disk.
