Removable Media - Iomega REV

REV is a removable hard disk storage system from Iomega. They are the successors to Iomega’s Jaz drives in several respects. They are available in capacities 35 GB, 70 GB or 120 GB. Current drives allow data transfer speeds of about 25 megabytes per second.

According to Iomega officials, the new Rev 120GB backup drives offers more native capacity, near instantaneous random access to files, faster backups and restores, and ruggedized cartridges.

Like the Jaz drives, Rev disks use hard-drive technology. They use a flying head to read and write data to a spinning platter. The removable disks contain the platter, spindle, and motor, while the Rev drive contains the drive heads and drive controllers.

The Rev is available as both external and internal models. The external desktop model is provided with FireWire, SCSI or USB 2.0 interfaces, whereas the internal model is provided with SCSI, ATAPI, or SATA interfaces. Additionally, there is an external Server model, which features a cartridge autoloader and SCSI interface. The server model is sold as a replacement of tape drive technology for enterprise data backup.

Rev drives are compatible with Macintosh, Windows and Linux operating systems. The drives are formatted with the UDF file system on Windows and Unix/Linux. On Apple systems, they may be formatted as HFS+ or UDF in Mac OS X.
