Macintosh Recovery - Jaguar

Mac OS X version 10.2, nicknamed “Jaguar” was the third major release of Apple’s operating system for servers and desktop computers. The operating system was well received by Mac users because of its stability, general speed enhancements and the lineup of both graphical and command line applications. One of the major drawbacks cited was the user interface speed issues.

Jaguar was originally made available on 23 August 2002 for single computer installations and in a family pack that allowed five installations on separate computers in one household. It was the first Mac OS X release to publicly use its code name in marketing and advertising.

Jaguar supported a series of computers including PowerMac G3, G4, early PowerMac G5, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer. It used PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 running at 233 MHz or higher. The OS required 128 megabytes of RAM.

Important features added to this version include address book, Bonjour (an IETF open protocol that allows devices over a network to essentially ‘find each other’ with a directory listing service), common UNIX printing system (CUPS), a revamped Finder with searching built directly to every window, an adaptive spam mail filter, network support for Microsoft Windows networks, Sherlock 3 Web services, universal access, increased speed across the entire system, journaled file system and Quartz Extreme that allowed compositing graphics directly on the video card.

Mac OS X v 10.2 was marketed as Jaguar everywhere except in the United Kingdom due to an agreement with the car manufacturer Jaguar, although boxes and CDs still bore the Jaguar-skin logo.
