Mac OS X version 10.5, codenamed “Leopard” is the sixth major release of Mac OS X, the desktop and server operating created by Apple Inc. Leopard was released on 26 October 2007. Leopard was available in two variants: a desktop version and a server version. Leopard is the last version of Mac OS X to support the PowerPC architecture.
Leopard has been enhanced with over 300 changes over its predecessor Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. They include a revised desktop with a redesigned Dock, Stacks, semitransparent menu bar and an updated Finder with CoverFlow visual navigation interface.
Leopard also supports 64-bit graphical user interface applications and an automated backup utility called Time Machine. It offers support for Spotlight searches across multiple machines and includes Front Row and Photo Booth, which were earlier included only in some Mac models.
Additional features include a new improved Automator that enables creating or editing workflows, Back to My Mac feature for MobileMe users that allows them to access files on their home computers while away from home, a Boot Camp software assistant that allows for the installation of other operating systems, and a dictionary that can search Wikipedia and Apple terminology.
iCal is provided with calendar sharing and group scheduling as well as syncing event invitations from Mail. iChat enhancements include multiple logins, invisibility, animated icons, and tabbed chats. iChat Theater, allows users to incorporate images from iPhoto, presentations from Keynote, videos from QuickTime, and other Quick Look features into video chats.
As of 2008, more than 20 percent of Macs use Leopard as their operating system.
