Removable Media Recovery - Nero Burning ROM

Nero Burning ROM, popularly known as Nero, is an optical disk authoring software for Microsoft Windows. The software is developed by Nero AG and is distributed both as a standalone version and as part of Nero software suite for Microsoft Windows.

Nero Linux is a recent standalone version of the program. It works on various Linux distributions. It does not work on Microsoft Windows. Nero Linux was announced as a free upgrade from the Microsoft Windows version in 2005. It has many features of the Windows version and uses a GTK+ graphical toolkit.

A more simplified version, Nero Express, targets entry-level customers. This software features a more streamlined user interface and includes additional features not included in the Windows version. Nero Express is also integrated into Nero software suite, especially in OEM editions, which lack Nero Burning ROM.

Nero is compatible with a number of optical disk image formats including the popular ISO image and Nero’s proprietary NRG file format. Newer versions support more formats. Nero also supports lossless formats such as FLAC, Wavpack and Shorten when suitable plug-ins or codecs are installed. Most of these plug-ins are available for free. Nero AG also sells some video and proprietary audio plug-ins.

As of June 2009, Nero has released nine versions of Nero Burning ROM and three versions of Nero Linux.
