Macintosh Recovery - Panther

Mac OS X version 10.3, code named “Panther,” is the fourth major release of Mac OS X, the desktop and server operating system from Apple. Apple released Panther on October 24, 2003. Panther requires a New World ROM, so certain old computers such as beige Power Mac G3s and Wall street PowerBook G3s are unable to run Panther by default.

Panther runs on PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor (at least 233 MHz). It requires at least 128 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended) and at least 1.5 GB of available hard disk space. Internet access requires a compatible service provider. iDisk requires a .Mac account. Panther also requires a built-in USB for the New World ROM.

Improved Features

The following new features are provided in Mac OS X v10.3 Panther.

  • An updated Finder - a new real-time search engine- with customizable sidebar, secure deletion, file labels, and built-in zip support.
  • Fast user switching that allows a user to remain logged in while another user logs in.
  • Expose, a new feature that helps the user manage windows by showing them all as thumbnails.
  • TextEdit is made compatible with Microsoft Word documents.
  • Xcode developer tools such as gcc 3.3 give faster compile times.
  • Increased speed with PDF rendering.
  • QuickTime now supports the Pixlet high definition video codec.

Panther is also provided with a number of new applications such as Font Book, FileVault, iChat AV with built-in audio and video conferencing, X11, and Safari browser. Microsoft Windows interoperability improvements include support for SecurID-based VPNs. Other features added include a built-in Fax.
