Pentium M
Hard Drive Recovery - Pentium M
The Pentium M brand refers to two single-core 32-bit x86 microprocessors intended for use in laptop personal computers. They were evolved from the core of Pentium III-branded CPU. Pentium M was based on the modified Intel P6 microarchitecture.
Introduced in March 2003, Pentium M formed a part of Intel Centrino platform. They had maximum power consumption (TDP) of 3-25 W. The first Pentium M-branded CPU was code-named Banias. It was followed by Dothan.
Pentium M evolved from the Pentium-III core by adding the bus interface of Pentium 4, an improved instruction decoding and issuing front end, improved branch prediction, SSE2 support, and a much larger cache.
Pentium M was optimized for power efficiency, a vital feature for extending the battery life of laptops. It runs with very low average power consumption and much lower heat output than desktop processors. It also has lower clock speed than the laptop version of Pentium 4 (Pentium 4-Mobile), but had similar performance.
Other Applications
Although Pentium M was designed for mobile applications, motherboard manufacturers such as AOpen, DFI and MSI have been shipping compatible boards for suitable HTPC, workstation and server applications. Similarly, Shuttle Inc. offers packaged Pentium M desktops marketed for their low power consumption and minimal noise. ASUS, a famous netbook manufacturer, has developed an adapter (CT-479) for the use of Pentium M processors in selected ASUS motherboards designed for Socket 478 Pentium 4 processors. Because of their low energy consumption, Pentium M processors are also the favorites of embedded system manufacturers.
The Pentium M-branded processors, were succeeded by the Core-branded dual-core mobile Yonah CPU.
