Hard Drive Recovery - Transmeta Corporation

Transmeta Corporation was a California-based company engaged in the development and licensing of computing, microprocessor, and semiconductor technologies, and related intellectual property. The company was founded in 1995 by Bob Cmelik, Dave Ditzel, Colin Hunter, Ed Kelly, Doug Laird, Malcolm Wing, and Greg Zyner.

Transmeta designs, develops, and sells x86-compatible software-based microprocessors for computing platforms. The company has produced two x86-compatible CPU architectures: Crusoe and Efficeon. These CPUs are used in subnotebooks, tablet PCs and blade servers, and other computer applications where low power consumption and heat dissipation are vital.

However, Crusoe, first family of microprocessors from Transmeta, faced endured criticism due to the large discrepancies between projections and actual for performance and power. Though they surpassed their Intel and AMD counterparts in terms of power consumption, they showed only a marginal improvement in battery life.

Efficeon, Transmeta’s second-generation 256-bit VLIW processors, addressed many of Crusoe’s shortcomings and showed roughly a 2x real-world improvement over Crusoe. Efficeon used a smaller die than that used in Pentium 4 and Pentium M, which used the same process technology. Efficeon also surpassed the previous model in terms of computational efficiency, low power consumption, and a low thermal footprint.

Transmeta also provides designing and engineering services to other companies. It also develops and licenses power management technologies for controlling leakage and increasing power efficiency in semiconductor and computing devices. They offer these services to semiconductor manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers through distributors, and stocking and manufacturers representatives. Transmeta has licensing agreements with Sony Group, NEC Electronics, Fujitsu Limited, Toshiba Corporation, and Microsoft Corporation.
In January 2009, Transmeta was acquired by Novafora.
